Facebook has just introduced the new Timeline for Pages. Though this move is not a surprise, marketers and business owners have some restrictions to cope with.
Now we will describe two things, which are not that good, but this post will have a happy ending.
Bad No.1: No Default Tabs
You have custom tabs no more to set as landing pages. In other words, when somebody comes to your Page for the first time he/she has to see your timeline, and not your welcome page, promotion, sweepstakes or welcome video. From now on, your cover image has to tell your story. You may think for a moment that you can place something on this image like “Click below to see the sweepstakes”, or “See our 30% off deal”, but unfortunately it’s a MISTAKE.
Bad No.2: Restrictions on the cover image
The cover image should not be explicitly used for advertising, but to identify you, a popular product or a distinct characteristic. It can contain neither calls to action or contact information, including web address, email or other information that may be more appropriate in your Page’s About section. In addition, you can’t use Face book’s features such as Share or Like.
So what do we suggest? Graphics should tell your story. It is the best to experiment, choose something unique, descriptive and see the reactions. We strongly advise not to use any written indications of your business, unless it is your company name.
Reason: Why does Facebook have this policy?
Well, Facebook’s revenue comes mostly from selling ads (which are better and better though). We believe that’s why Facebook doesn’t want you to advertise yourself on the cover image. But there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Good No.1: Pin and Highlight!
Pinning: If you want to advertise your promotion, or tell a very important message, pin the post, so you can fix it on the top of your timeline (it will remain there for 7 days – after that, it’ll return to the date it was posted on the Page’s timeline). This way your pinned post will be seen first, when someone visits. You do the best if you use pictures, since they are larger, and they can refer to your story.
Highlighting: You might have a wide picture you want to advertise. You can even cut a slice from the promotion you run currently. That story can be as wide as your cover photo.
Advices for efficient image posting: if you wish to advertise your promotion or special content on a Page tab, we suggest you to do the following:
- Create an eye-catching picture; here you can share your message.
- Write a call to action comment below this picture, like “Click here, and enter the sweepstakes”, then insert a URL referring to your promotion or special offer.
Good No.2: Change the order of views and apps
You should use the views and apps as images to advertise your promotion. Make the important ones visible! You can change their order except the photos view, which will always appear first.
Happy ending: Promotions to timeline pages
We are prepared for this challenge, and we provides a (still free!) tool to take benefit of the recent improvements. Log in to the platform, and see it under the “Facebook app” tab.
